Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has said emergency services are making headway in the battle against forest fires that have raged across the country for weeks.
Three out of seven regions which had been in a state of emergency have now been declared safe.
But there have been angry demonstrations in the Russian capital over the government's slow response to the heatwave, fires and smog.
