An Israeli police officer suffers light wounds after he is stabbed by a Palestinian man at Hebron's Cave of the Patriarch, a shrine holy to both Jews and Muslims.
In the melee, the police officer's partner shot the assailant, critically injuring him.
He was evacuated to an Israeli hospital.
The Cave of the Patriarch is one of the most volatile spots in the West Bank.
In 1994, a Jewish settler shot and killed 29 Muslim worshippers in the cave before being beaten to death at the scene.
Some 400 Jewish settlers live in heavily guarded enclaves in the city, which is also home to some 150,000 Palestinians.
