These two springs are made of hardened steel but when glowing red hot they appear to fail very early in the process.

One spring ( ex. fluorescent tube assembly ) was tested in an ice block while the other spring (ex. couch ) was put on a block of wood which caught fire in the process.
First 24 Volts AC was used, then 150 volts 40 Amps AC which tripped the 20 Amp breaker, then 100 Volts AC for the final burn out.
