Arizona has been heavily criticised for adopting legislation that allows police to stop suspected illegal immigrants and ask them for proof of citizenship.

A group of religious leaders from the state, opposing the law, have travelled to Washington to lobby for a federal law on illegal immigration to overturn the controversial Arizona legislation.

However, an opinion poll suggests that many Americans support the state's strict new measures.
