A Libyan aircraft has crashed while attempting to land at Tripoli airport, leaving an eight-year-old Dutch boy as the sole survivor.

The Airbus A330, with 104 people onboard, was on a regular flight from Johannesburg when it crashed in a field short of Tripoli airport's runway.

Libyan officials said they had recovered black boxes from the debris and are now trying to figure out what went wrong.

Haru Mutasa reports from Johannesburg, South Africa.
