Delhi bans beggars in games run-up

There are an estimated 60,000 beggars on the streets of the Indian capital, many of whom cannot survive without begging for alms.

The Indian government is using an old anti-begging law to arrest beggars in New Delhi in an attempt to clear up the city in advance of the Commonwealth Games, one of the largest sporting events in the world due to begin later this year.

But as Al Jazeera's Prerna Suri reports, critics say instead of persecuting beggars for being poor, the government should help them. (6 March 2010)
