Shortly after Barack Obama, the US president, made the decision to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Nato secretary-general, announced the alliance would also be sending more soldiers to fight in the war.

He said Nato members would send at least 5,000 additional troops to Afghanistan, but the announcement comes at a time of waning public support for the conflict.
