The Pakistani army is claiming a major breakthrough in its battle against the Taliban in South Waziristan.

After days of fierce fighting, the military says it has seized control of Kotkai, said to be the hometown of Hakimullah Mehsud, the Pakistani Taliban leader.

But in the shadow of military accomplishments, the fighting is forcing civilians to flee. More than 200,000 people have left their homes and still more are expected to follow.

Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher reports from Islamabad.
