Victor Gao was a translator for Deng Xiaoping, a former leader known to have started reforms that led to China's economic growth.
Gao tells Al Jazeera that while the Tiananmen crackdown was a "tragedy", the Chinese leadership learnt that political stability was paramount to achieving continued development.
