Infection Causes Certain Cancers

Dr. David Samadi, leading prostate cancer surgeon, discusses the dangers of certain infections and the cancers they can cause. Gastric cancer, cervical cancer, and liver cancer are all diseases caused by infection. Worldwide it is estimated that one in six cancers are caused by preventable or treatable infections. While the majority of these are in underdeveloped countries, Dr. Samadi stresses the importance of routine medical care, testing, and vaccines to prevent these infections. Globally, 50% of infectious cancers in woman are due to high risk HPV 16 and 18. In men, 80% are due to Hepatitis B and C and H Pylori (a stomach bacteria). Women should have annual pap smear tests to detect cervical cancer before it develops and parents are now encouraged to have their children vaccinated against HPV.
