Two firebombs were thrown at the offices of Italy's tax enforcement agency in Livorno on Saturday.
They landed on the doorsteps of the Equitalia building, but nobody was hurt.
Police believe anarchists carried out the attack.
It follows a wave of highly publicised suicides in Italy, where the government of Mario Monti has hiked taxes to fight spiralling public debt.
