The UK’s Telegraph newspaper has published a series of stories on the shady business dealings of Gu Kailai, the wife of disgraced Communist Party official Bo Xilai. Gu is a suspect in the killing of British businessman Neil Heywood. These stories include revelations about the relationship between Gu and a wealthy French businessman.
The paper, citing an unnamed source, alleged Gu tried to use a deal to buy a hot air balloon from a UK based company to launder money out of China. The funds, 200 thousand pounds or over 320 thousand US dollars, was reportedly proceeds of corruption in Dalian. That’s the city in Northern China where Gu’s husband Bo Xilai served as Mayor between 1992 and 2000.
Some believe these revelations are being made against Gu Kailai as a result of the Communist Party’s factional infighting. More specifically, the faction Bo Xilai belonged to – that of former Communist Party leader Jiang Zemin – is feeding these revelations to the UK media.

“Because someone purposefully released this information, this person definitely had a purpose, to turn public opinion against the target, and not to help with the investigation. They are already in control of this thing. The purpose is to release some information to expose them, this is the purpose.”
But why would Jiang’s faction want to expose Gu and Bo for money laundering?
