Russia is baking in its hottest summer on record, but efforts to stay cool are having deadly consequences.

The temperature in Moscow, the capital of Russia, hit 35 degrees Celsius on Thursday, which was recorded as the hottest day in 30 years.

Now, Russians are heading to lakes and rivers in droves to escape the heat. Unfortunately, they usually do so with some beer or vodka in tow accounting for thousands of people who have died drowning.

Al Jazeera's Neave Barker reports.
