Nicaraguan abortion law under fire

2012-05-09 20

The Central American nation of Nicaragua is one of a handful of countries with a complete ban on abortion.

Under the law, any medical procedure is banned if it jeopardises the life of the fetus, even if the procedure is meant to save the mother's life.

But protesters are now calling on the government to reverse the law after a 27-year-old pregnant woman with cancer says she was told she couldn't have an aggressive chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment because it would harm her baby.
