Boris Johnson re-elected as Mayor of London after a closely fought campaign.

Conservative Boris Johnson won a second term as London's mayor on Friday, beating opposition Labour rival Ken Livingstone and giving a boost to Prime Minister David Cameron's party after heavy losses in local elections.

Johnson, 47, a flamboyant and outspoken character, has been tipped as a possible future Conservative leader. He defied voting trends elsewhere to beat Labour's Livingstone, who had been mayor for eight years before losing to Johnson in 2008.

[Boris Johnson, Re-elected Mayor of London]:
"Tomorrow we continue with our work but tonight we will celebrate sensible, cost-effective, Conservative administration in London over the next four years with a non-taxpayer libation. Thank you very, very much everybody and may the forth be with you."
