During the almost four years of Khmer Rouge rule in Cambodia, it's thought around 14,000 people were sent to the infamous S-21 prison in Phnom Penh.

Only a handful are known to have survived, among them artist Vann Nath.

Since 1979 he's made a living painting his own story of life under the Khmer Rouge.

He tells Al Jazeera his story.
