French President Nicolas Sarkozy held a giant and elaborately-produced May Day rally in front of the Eiffel Tower on Tuesday, with barely five days to go before the final round of voting in presidential elections, as opinion polls put him behind the Socialist candidate, Francois Hollande. Sarkozy greeted the crowd by saying 200,000 people had turned out for the rally, although independent estimates of the crowd were not immediately available.
