Chinese rights activist Chen Guangcheng is in the US Embassy in Beijing, says fellow rights activist Hu Jia.
Chen made a dramatic escape from his home in Shandong province on April 22. He had been held under house arrest there for the last year and a half.
News broke of Chen's escape four days later. Rights activist Hu Jia told NTD that Chen was likely in the US Embassy. The US Embassy has not commented on Chen.
[Hu Jia, Beijing Human Rights Activist]:
"A friend of mine working at the Associated Press called me today at 9:50 pm, say that he has confirmed from the embassy that it should be true. Many policemen came to my house yesterday. It's obviously because that Chen's wife stayed at my place once. Their nervousness kind of proves that it may be true. That is so exciting. It starts a new act."
Hours after Hu Jia spoke with NTD, his wife posted a photo of Hu meeting with Chen Guangcheng.
A blind, self-taught lawyer, Chen Guangcheng spent four years in prison after defending victims of forced abortions in China as a result of the one-child policy. After his release in 2010, he was put under house arrest by local authorities.
[Hu Jia, Beijing Human Rights Activist]:
"Guangcheng himself is a victim and witness. We should analyze the human rights situation in China through his case to see what the so-called "harmonious" human rights really looks like. He can speak about how much he has been harmed, and how much his family has suffered."
After Chen's escape, his brother's family was harassed on April 27 by local authorities. His brother and nephew have been detained. Separately, He Peirong, a supporter of Chen who helped him escape, was also detained from her home in Nanjing.
Information about Chen Guangcheng and his family is now being censored on the Chinese internet.
