In Sri Lanka Hashan was an outspoken journalist and human rights activist. He fled his country in 2007, fearing he would be persecuted by his government because of his criticism of its human rights record in the 'war' against the Tamil Tiger rebels in the north of the country. He ended up in Denmark where he is now stranded, like many others from war-torn countries, in an asylum centre.
