The new Obama administration has only been in office for a few weeks, but already there are signs that US policy in Afghanistan is changing. And they are changes that could even have implications for the country's president.

Hamid Karzai was once a White House favourite, but his popularity is dwindling both at home and abroad.

It's a situation he'll be desperate to reverse ahead of this year's election, as Hamish MacDonald reports.
