The Blue Economy - Innovation No.12: Wind Energy without Turbines

2012-04-26 1

Have you ever wondered why a blade of grass pressed between your thumbs whistles when you blow on it? It is the same force that waives flags in the wind. The cord holding the flag vibrates in the wind. This vibration can build up a tremendous force.

Inventor Shawn Frayne was committed to bring energy to Haiti. Instead of using expensive photovoltaic devices or turbines which rely on rare earth metals, Shawn imagined a solution based on flutter, this aerodynamic force that vibrates an elongated elastic. Instead of going against the power of nature, he harvests it and turns it into electricity.

The first mass application for flutter-generated electricity may be well be in Bhutan. The citizens of this Buddhist Nation put up flags to pray. Everyone knows where the wind blows best. Each flagpole can be equipped with a vibrating cord. Praying while generating electricity sounds like holy energy.
