Volcano erupts near Mexico City

2012-04-21 97

A 5,500 metre volcano outside Mexico City has spewed burning rock down its slopes and plumes of ash into the sky.

Residents of a nearby village were awakened by the eruption of the native-Indian named
Popocatepetil, which is an iconic backdrop to the capital's skyline on clear days.

Authorities have prepared 50 buses to evacuate villagers if necessary.
