The Indonesian militant stands accused of making bombs that killed 202 people - mostly Australian tourists - at Bali nightclubs in 2002.
On Thursday, a U.S. federal investigator testified in court.
Francis J Belatado said he believes Patek intended to kill with the bombs he made.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED STATES FEDERAL INVESTIGATOR, FRANCIS J BELETADO, SAYING:
"So his expertise from what we have learned was in explosive making. And then the Bali bombing happens and his fingerprints are in the bomb, and his fingerprints are in the bomb house where the bomb was constructed, clearly indicates that Mr. Patek was there and was involved. And based on the size of the bomb that he constructed, it's clear he knew that the bomb intended to kill people."
But Patek's lawyers maintain that the witness testimonies don't link the bombs to their client.
Patek is also accused of mixing chemicals for 13 bombs that detonated in five churches in Jakarta on Christmas Eve 2000, killing around 15 people.
The Bali bombs were a watershed for Indonesia, which has the world's third-largest Muslim population -- forcing the secular state to confront the presence of violent militants on its soil.
