2012-04-14 161

Mount Etna has erupted for the sixth time this year.

The latest activity, at the 3,300 metre mountain on the Italian island of Sicily, sent lava and plumes of smoke into the air

The eruption created a new crater in the volcano's southeast side, but the airport at nearby Catania is still open.

Some 25 percent of Sicily's population live on Etna's slopes.
