Jenna Talackova, a 23-year-old model from Vancouver, has been disqualified from the Miss Universe Canada pageant because she is transgender.

Talackova had been selected as a finalist in the competition but was abruptly dropped when organizers learned she was born a man. The rules are said to stipulate that all entrants be "naturally born female," however the only requirements listed on the official Miss Universe Canada website have to do with citizenship and age.

Open about her lifestyle, Talackova revealed in a 2010 interview that she had a gender reassignment procedure at age 19 and knew she was meant to be a woman when she was only 4 years old.

Supporters who say Talackova should be reinstated have drawn up an online petition to Donald Trump, who owns the global family of Miss Universe pageants as well as the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA competitions.
