The US soldier accused of killing 17 Afghan civilians will be charged with 17 separate counts of murder.
Alleged victims of 38-year-old Staff Sergeant Robert Bales included three women and nine children.
Bales is said to have left his base and attacked villagers in Kandahar province last week.
