Local media reported 21-year-old Roberto Laudisio was chased by police and tasered in Sydney, after he allegedly stole a packet of biscuits from a convenience store.
Australian police have defended their use of stun guns, but Brazilian diplomats are demanding an explanation.
A law enforcement official said that the use of Tasers was well-regulated within the New South Wales police force.
The student's family was on its way from Sao Paolo to Sydney.
