Police and protesters clash in the Chilean capital Santiago.

Activists were marching on Wednesday in support of the isolated southern region of Asyen - where residents are demanding health and educational reforms.

One activist in Santiago said authorities have been cracking down on the protest movement.

"The repression that the government unleashed in the Asyen region is absolutely unacceptable and the repression isn't just violence."

Chile has been rocked by weeks of protest in Asyen, leading to the temporary closure of port facilities and roads.
