The mayor of Chongqing breaks his silence on the Wang Lijun incident from last month. He called Wang a "national problem." Wang was the Chongqing official who fled to the US Consulate in Chengdu, sparking widespread speculation about power struggles and instability within the Communist Party.

Wang Lijun is the former deputy mayor of Chongqing, who fled to the US Consulate in Chengdu at the beginning of February. Wang is believed to have handed over sensitive information to US authorities—information about him and his boss Bo Xilai's illegal activity in their anti-crime campaign and possibly the persecution of Falun Gong. When about 70 police cars turned up outside the consulate the message was clear, authorities did not want Wang to escape. Some witnesses claimed the police vehicles had Chongqing license plates.

In the interview, Huang admits police vehicles did surround the consulate and that he also went there with his secretary. But he plays down his involvement, claiming they were Sichuan police and that the state was behind it.

[Huang Qifan, Mayor of Chongqing]:
"As for saying there were so many police cars outside (the consulate), and they all had Sichuan license plates, they were from Sichuan, that is very normal. In whatever country, if you have someone go into a consulate, to prevent all kinds of situations happening, you would use the force of the police to surround the consulate, that is the behavior of the state, of course it isn't that I took 70 police cars there myself."

Wang Lijun's current situation is unknown and US lawmakers have called on the US government to release any information handed over by Wang. Huang Qifan should be nervous, but so far central authorities have made no efforts to remove him or Bo Xilai from their posts.
