Afghan police fire on protesters

Afghan police fire shots into a crowd of about 500 protesters in the capital Kabul.

It is the third day of demonstrations over the burning of copies of the Koran at NATO's main military base in Afghanistan.

The United States has said that burning copies of the Islamic holy book at Bagram air base was "unintentional", but the incident has resulted in a PR nightmare for the U.S.-led NATO forces.

Protests also continued in the eastern city of Jalalabad, where demonstrators shouted "Death to America".

(SOUNDBITE) (Pashto) PROTESTER, ABDULLAH, SAYING:

"We urge the government to condemn this action, and we want a trial for the perpetrator of this action. Those who burned the Koran must be punished. They must be punished in front of all the Afghan nation. The people of Afghanistan don't want foreigners any more. They are against our beliefs and they are spreading corruption in our country."

Muslims consider the Koran the literal word of God, and desecration of the book is considered one of the worst forms of blasphemy.

The fury across the country could complicate U.S. and NATO attempts to reach a strategic pact with the Afghan government that would allow troops to remain in the country after 2014.
