Media mogul Rupert Murdoch surprised everyone this week when he announced the launch of a new title — The Sun on Sunday.

The Sun on Sunday is the successor to the News of the World, which was closed in disgrace in July last year following revelations that its reporters had hacked the mobile phone accounts of hundreds of famous people.

The announcement came after Murdoch flew in to London to mediate in what commentators have called a "civil war" within News Corp following the arrest of 10 Sun journalists. They were arrested after News International Management and Standards Committee handed evidence of illegal payments made by reporters to police to the authorities.

Murdoch moved quickly to reassure Sun staff before announcing the expedited launch, a move many believe is designed to deflect attention from News Corp's continuing legal woes.
