Traders battle Peru mall fire

Traders armed with buckets of water fight to save this shopping centre in the Peruvian capital from the blazing inferno within.

The fire at the centre in Lima started with an explosion blamed on an electrical fault.

SOUNDBITE: Namesio Paitan, merchant, saying (Spanish)

"As soon as the flames ignited we rapidly tried to rescue the merchandise and tried to put out the fire with water buckets.

No serious injuries have been reported but dozens have undergone hospital treatment after breathing in smoke.

That may be more down to luck than judgment.

The failure of the complex to meet safety standards was highlighted by authorities last December, a warning authorities say went unheeded by local businesses.
