Four Chinese referees have been slammed by a court in Liaoning Province for match fixing games. They collectively pockets hundreds of thousands of dollars... and were even refs for the World Cup and Olympics.
Four Chinese football referees were handed prison sentences for corruption on Thursday. It's the latest in a string of scandals that have rocked the sport in China.
The four men received sentences of between three and a half and seven years at the Intermediate People's Court in China's northern Dandong City in Liaoning Province.
Lu Jun, or the "Golden Whistle", China's best known referee who officiated matches at the 2002 World Cup and the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, was charged with taking a total of $130,000 in bribes for fixing seven domestic league matches.
He was given five and a half years in prison and had $16,000 worth of property confiscated.
Lu's colleague, Huang Junjie, was accused of taking over $230,000 in 21 cases.
The cases involved several of China's top clubs, including Shanghai Shenhua, who have recently signed former French striker Anelka and appointed his compatriot Jean Tigana as coach.
China's professional football league has enraged football fans for years with allegations of match fixing, gambling and corruption.
