29 Chinese construction workers held hostage by Sudanese rebel forces near the border of South Sudan are free and are now being flown to Kenya. That's according to a statement from Sudan's foreign ministry. On Monday, the Chinese regime's Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that the workers were in good health and the rebels promised they will be released any day now.
The workers were being held in South Kordofan by the SPLM-North rebel group. A rebel spokesman said that air strikes by the Sudanese army were interfering with the release of the workers and they were waiting on Sudan and China to agree on the terms of the handover.
This kind of event highlights the risks brought by the Chinese regime's heavy economic footprint in Africa... especially in areas deemed unsafe by Western companies.
