Thousands participate in Tokyo evacuation drill

An earthquake warning alarm rings out in Tokyo - but thankfully this is just a drill.

More than 10,000 people participate in a large-scale evacuation drill to prepare for the possibility of another massive earthquake.

The drill simulates the city being hit by a 7.3 magnitude earthquake.

Participants are taught how to extinguish fires and find evacuation points, while authorities distribute blankets and emergency goods.

Over 5 million people are estimated to have been stranded in Tokyo when the 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit the country in March last year.

The government and scientists are now split as to how likely another major earthquake is to hit the capital.

The official government prediction sees a 70 percent chance of a massive tremor hitting Tokyo in the next 30 years.

But Tokyo university researchers say it could happen in the next four years.

The March 2011 quake - the largest on record in Japan - resulted in a massive tsunami and left up to 20,000 people dead or missing.
