Floods prompt Australia aid airlift

Australia's military was preparing to deliver aid on Friday to parts of the east hit by summer floods.

The New South Wales town of Moree is the recipient. This is what the town looked like ahead of the supply drop.

About a quarter of its population of around 8, 000 have taken refuge at evacuation shelters.

In New South Wales and Queensland more than 11, 000 people have been cut off the floods.

There's worse in store for some.

The Bureau of Meteorology's issued a severe weather warning for parts of Queensland state.

It said heavy rains, intense at times, threatened to further swell already-overflowing rivers and could trigger localised flash floods.

There was better news for New South Wales where another severe weather warning was cancelled.

Both states suffered severe floods a year ago which killed about 35 people and swamped 30, 000 homes.

Coal mines, roads, bridges and railway lines were also damaged, hampering Australia's economic growth.
