Tension-- as police attempt to evict illegal settlers near Brazil's business capital of Sao Paulo on Sunday.
The settlers threw stones and torched cars, as they tried to stop riot police from entering their community.
Police officers fired shots towards the direction of the protest.
Six thousand people are set to lose their homes in Sao Jose dos Campos. They've been living in the settlement since 2004.
Police said they had regained control over the area and would be clearing the land the next day.
Seventeen settlers were arrested following the clashes. Some were trying to negotiate with police.
The settlers have been staging protests against eviction for over a week. Some activists have even blocked a major highway.
Local government officials said the landless workers living in Pinheirinho would be given support as they try to find new housing.
In the meantime, many of them are temporarily staying in improvised shelters.
