On Wednesday, six giant pandas were released into the controlled wilderness of China's Sichuan province. If the wildlife test drive goes well, it will be a big step in the effort to replenish the giant panda population in the world.

Local experts, panda officials, and basketball star Yao Ming were there for the release. The six chosen pandas were carefully selected from the 108 pandas at the Chengdu base, after a year of careful observation.

They were released into 300+ acres of enclosed forest, called Panda Valley. So far, the newly released pandas have learned to forage for their own food and not rely on breeders.

Zoologists are confident that releasing more pandas in the wild will decrease inbreeding risks, and help the species survive.
