Daniel Ortega was sworn in Tuesday (January 10) as president of Nicaragua before his closest and most financially supportive allies Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and more than other 30 international delegations.
Despite the controversy surrounding his reelection, Ortega won the November 6 presidential elections with 62.4 per cent of the vote, rejecting appeals by two opposition candidates who alleged fraud. His re-election gives him another five-year term as Nicaragua's Head of State.
The swearing-in ceremony took place late afternoon in the capital city of Managua's Revolution Square. A crowd of nearly 10,000 people celebrated Ortega's new term in office.
Ortega, 66, has moderated some of his socialist policies since regaining the presidency five years ago and he has won praise for letting private businesses operate freely even as he pushed policies aimed at combating poverty.
