North Korea's state-run television KRT on Tuesday (December 20) showed still photos of Kim Jong-il lying in state, visited by his son Jong-un and government officials.
The North's official news agency KCNA said a "solemn" memorial ceremony was held in Pyongyang on Tuesday, to pay respects to the late leader lying in a glass coffin surrounded by flowers.
The North's heir apparent Kim Jong-un, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Worker's Party, attended the ceremony, as well as senior officials of the party, state and military.
The reclusive country's official media lauded Jong-un as the "outstanding leader of our party, army and people".
Little is known of Kim Jong-un, who is believed to be in his late 20s, and to have studied briefly at a school in Switzerland.
KRT said Kim Jong-il died on Saturday (December 17) due to a sudden illness while on a train trip.
Kim's funeral is scheduled to be held on December 28.
