STORY: Palestinian youths clashed with Israeli police forces on Thursday (December 1, 2011), in a refugee camp on the edge of Jerusalem.
According to Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld, police was notified of disturbances near the Shuafat refugee camp checkpoint in the afternoon. Policemen at the scene were attacked with stones, and several Israeli flags were burned by youths protesting in the area, the spokesperson added. Eight Palestinians were arrested.
At least one Palestinian child was arrested by undercover Israeli police. The child was then taken into a local shop, and later picked up by a police jeep. The youths were protesting the construction of a barrier and a new checkpoint structure near the refugee camp.
The Shuafat refugee camp, within the expanded Jerusalem borders that Israel declared after capturing its eastern sector in a 1967 war, is often a friction point in the city at the heart of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
