French police fight anti-nuclear protesters in north-western France.
The few hundred activists were trying to block the departure of a train carrying reprocessed nuclear waste to Germany.
The violence came after nearly two hours of cat and mouse through the fields - in which protesters tried to circumvent police lines and reach the train tracks, and police attempted to prevent their advance using tear gas.
A spokesman from the Sud-Rail trade union called for a re appraisal on the safe transport of the nuclear material.
(SOUNDBITE) (French) PHILIPPE GUITER, ANTI-NUCLEAR PROTESTER FROM SUD-RAIL TRADE UNION, SAYING:
"We have to discuss this. The state railway company must stop trusting that Areva comply with security measures. We just don't want to talk about this any more. We have to discuss these convoys, their use, their frequency, the conditions under which they are carried out and finally to open the debate about exposure: of staff, but also of passengers."
A small group of protesters dressed as fishermen tried to enter the freight terminal itself, but were ejected by officials and police.
