Nightfall did little to quiet unrest in Cairo. Clouds of smoke hung over parts of Tahrir square as riot police fired off tear gas canisters in the direction of lingering protesters.
Clashes erupted earlier in the day after riot police broke up a rally to demand military rulers transfer power to a civilian government. A protest on Friday drew an estimated 50,000 people.
Demonstrators hurled rocks at riot police eventually setting fire to a police vehicle.
State television reported that seven policemen had been injured and at least five people were arrested.
