Palestinians protesting against controlled construction explosions scuffle with Israeli border police. The explosions are part of construction efforts of a controversial Israeli security barrier.
Israeli border police scuffle with Palestinians on Sunday at the site of the planned controlled explosion for the construction of Israel's West Bank barrier.
Residents of Wallaje village near Bethlehem have had to put up with frequent explosions in the area.
[Ahmed Awadallh, Wallije Resident]:
“The occupation authorities are conducting explosions on a daily basis for the wall which they claim is a security wall. 2 or 3 days ago we protested and told them that these explosions damage our houses. Today we went to protest and to speak with offices. But they insult us and sprayed tear gas on our faces and there are injuries. They also arrested some of the residents.”
Israeli police say left-wing activists and anarchists arrived at the site and disrupted their work.
Police arrested four, and dispersed the crowd.
Israel began building the barrier in 2002 following a wave of Palestinian suicide bombings.
The Israeli government says it is vital to stop Palestinian suicide bombers from reaching its cities.
Palestinians refer to it as an "apartheid wall" and says it amounts to a land grab of ancestral farmlands.
The world Court in The Hague says the 430 mile long barrier is legal.
