A special library which displays a variety of building materials came into the spotlight at the ongoing Beijing Design Week 2011, which kicked off last Monday.

It features bio-structure materials, natural from animal waste or other sources. One star attraction was plywood, recycled from an unlikely source.

[Lu Hongqiao, Design Project Manager]:
"It's environmentally friendly in that no glue is used in it, and 60 percent of the material is from cow dung."

Lu added that the remaining 40 percent of the plywood was taken from rubbish and some fibers.

This foam material is made from microscopic organisms.

[Lu Hongqiao, Design Project Manager]:
"Its bio structure makes it more elastic than plastic foam, and so it can play a better buffer role in minimizing the impact of the external force."

And this wallpaper plays a vital function apart from decoration.

[Lu Hongqiao, Design Project Manager]:
"The nanometer-level particles in the wallpaper can absorb and permanently lock up poisonous substances from the wall."

Over 6,500 innovative and sustainable materials were collected worldwide for display at the exhibit. They're intended not just for use in architecture but also in fashion, interior design, and transportation.
