An eight-year-old child is killed by a tornado that tore through the Duduza township near Nigel, east of Johannesburg. Hundreds were injured and left homeless by the twister.
Township dwellers on Monday surveyed the damage caused by a tornado that tore through the Duduza township south east of Johannesburg on Sunday causing the death of an 8 year-old child and injuring more than 160 people.
[Phindi Mokgothu, Duduza Resident]:
"It was so scary, it was so scary. I have never seen a tornado in my life, it was a life experience. I used to see it in the movie or television, but this was—it was so scary. I thought it was the end of my life. I have never seen something like this."
Hundreds were left homeless and spent the night at a local multi-purpose center.
[Mantshadi Magale, Duduza Resident]:
"Yes we got the help, those who were injured were taken to hospital, some were taken to the multi-purpose centre and others were taken by ambulance to different hospitals."
The streets were littered with broken television screens, furniture and corrugated iron roofing from houses.
Six people were also arrested for looting homes in the aftermath.
The cost of the damage caused by the tornado still has to be assessed.
