Al Baghdadi Ali Al-Mahmoudi, seen here in file footage, was Libya's prime minister until the fall of Muammar Gaddafi last month.
His arrest in Tunisia is the highest profile detention of a Gaddafi associate to date, and is being welcomed by Libya's interim government.
SOUNDBITE: Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, National Transitional Council spokesman, saying (Arabic):
"Of course the news of the arrest of Al Baghdadi Ali Al-Mahmoudi, the former prime minister of Gaddafi's regime, is very good news considering that he is a symbol of the former regime. He is wanted in Libya for crimes, not only during the revolution months, but also before the revolution broke out. Of course it's really important news for the revolution and for the effort to suppress Gaddafi."
Al-Mahmoudi has been jailed for six months in Tunisia, for entering the country illegally.
The justice minister in Libya's new government says Tripoli will seek his extradition to stand trial on home soil.
The country's National Transitional Council is still hunting for Gaddafi who continues to issue occasional defiant messages.
