The FTSE is steadying after sharp falls in the previous session, currently trading down 10 points at 5033.

The G20 has said it would take all necessary steps to calm the global financial system. The statement gave no details but helped stem the scale of losses in Asia in Friday trading.

Wall Street yesterday closed down 391 points after the grim outlook from US Federal Reserve and downbeat data from China.

Gold is heading towards its third weekly drop on a firmer dollar, currently trading at 1,738
