Thousands of residents in Sichuan Province in southwest China have evacuated their homes, as floodwaters ravage the region. Six people have died in the floods, and the death toll may rise further.

Heavy rain for the past week has swamped southwest China's Sichuan Province, killing six people and forcing authorities to evacuate thousands of residents.

Two people were killed when a house collapsed and a mudslide buried six houses in Nanjiang, state media reported on Monday.

The death toll may rise with two people still missing as of Sunday, according to local authorities.

The cities of Bazhong, Guang'an and Dazhou are among the worst affected areas.

Rising river levels have alarmed authorities in Bazhong, and caused traffic and communication services in the city to come to a halt, state media said.

Around 200,000 people in Guang'an and surrounding areas have been relocated to shelters on higher ground, state television said. In Qu County, 125,000 residents were relocated.

Floods triggered by heavy rains kill hundreds of people and force millions to evacuate every year during China's monsoon season.
