And Chinese aircraft makers have developed a new ultra-light helicopter. The civilian vehicle has just debuted at a major helicopter exposition.

The one-ton AC310 helicopter, equipped with a fuel-efficient engine and flexible rotor system, can carry two to three passengers and cruise at up to 98 miles per hour.

So says the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), which developed and manufactured the ultra-light helicopter. Local officials also promoted the development of the vehicle.

[Wang Sheng, Deputy Chief of Tianjin's Binhai Area]:
"We think that there should be a channel to build a system of the industry for the development of helicopter manufacturing."

The aircraft can be deployed for emergency rescue, environmental monitoring, flight training, and private use—the AC310 made its maiden flight in late August and is expected to acquire the aircraft type certificate from Chinese civil aviation authorities next May.

It is priced at 3.5-million yuan, affordable to China's rich and to flying clubs.
